Southeast Fisheries Research Center

Technical Support Services with the Department of Commerce, National Oceanographic and Aeronautics Administration, National Marine Fisheries Service, Southeast Fisheries Research Center, Mississippi Laboratories.

Technical support is provided for research, monitoring, remote sensing, gear development, computer and data management services, and field data collection, including at-sea collection, for the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) associated with population assessment and management of the natural resources of the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea and southeast Atlantic.

NOAA ship GunterWork is performed primarily at Pascagoula and Stennis Space Center or on NOAA owned or chartered research vessels or aircraft. IAPWS operates and performs simple maintenance of a 65-foot vessel. Other facilities where work may be performed are at SEFSC Laboratories and Field Stations and at the National Ocean Service (NOS) facilities engaged in cooperative work with the SEFSC. Other NMFS and NOS facilities include Galveston, TX; Panama City, FL; St. Petersburg, FL; Miami, FL; Charleston, SC; Beaufort, NC; and Oxford, MD. Survey cruises cover the southeastern region from New England through Texas, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as well as other nations (Mexico, Central America, and Caribbean Islands nations). Biological and environmental sampling from large vessels in the open ocean is performed. This includes observation of fishing activity engaged in commercial and recreational as well as field observations of marine mammals and turtles. Estuarine and near-shore biological and environmental sampling is conducted throughout the southeast region using small boats. The SEFSC provides gear research, development, and technology transfer services, which may sometimes involve work anywhere in the world.
